10 Essential Tips for Better Prompts
Ten specific habits that consistently improve the quality of AI output. None are tricks — they're the difference between writing a brief and dashing off a question.
Be specific and clear
Vague prompts yield vague answers. Instead of 'write about marketing', specify the topic, format, and audience.
"Write a 300-word LinkedIn post about B2B email marketing trends for CMOs."Use examples in your prompts
AI models are excellent at pattern matching. Providing a small example of what you want noticeably improves accuracy.
"Format the data like this: [Name] - [Email] - [Status]"Break complex tasks into steps
Don't ask the AI to do 5 things at once. Give it a numbered list of steps so it processes logic sequentially.
"1. Read the text. 2. Identify the tone. 3. Rewrite it to be more professional."Define the tone and style
Always tell the AI how it should sound. Professional, witty, empathetic, or academic?
"Use an encouraging, conversational tone without corporate jargon."Test and iterate
Your first prompt rarely gets the perfect result. Read the output, identify what's missing, and adjust your prompt.
"Add 'Do not use emojis' if the AI returns too many emojis."Use role-playing (act as X)
Assigning a persona gives the AI a frame of reference for its vocabulary and depth of knowledge.
"Act as a senior DevOps engineer reviewing this Dockerfile."Provide context
The AI doesn't know your business. Give it the 'why' behind your request.
"We are a startup launching next week, and we need a press release."Set constraints and limits
Prevent rambling by setting strict boundaries on length, format, or words to avoid.
"Keep the summary under 100 words. Do not use the word 'synergy'."Ask for reasoning
For complex problems, ask the AI to explain its thought process before giving the final answer. This reduces hallucinations.
"Think step-by-step and explain your reasoning before providing the final code."Refine based on output
If the output is close but not quite right, don't start over. Just prompt the AI to tweak the current response.
"Make the second paragraph shorter and punchier."
